What is the Inspire Study?

The INSPIRE study is a research program taking place at PARC. Past studies have proven exposure therapy to be an effective form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The purpose of the INSPIRE Study is to learn more about how to help parents of youth ages 5-12 participate in their child’s treatment for OCD and ways to increase the quality and quantity of parent-led treatment activities between sessions by using a parent training protocol. We hope that the results of this study will help future patients and families with OCD.

Who can participate?

You may be eligible for INSPIRE if your child:

  • Is 5–12 years old

  • Has symptoms of OCD

Common OCD symptoms include:

  • Thoughts that get “stuck” in your head

  • Feeling driven to do or repeat things such as tapping, checking, or hand-washing over and over

  • Fears of contamination, germs, or harm

  • Concerns related to perfectionism

  • Feeling that things are “not just right” unless they are done in a certain way

What will my child do as a part of the study?

  • All child study participants will receive a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) known as exposure therapy, which is an effective treatment for OCD.

  • Eligible participants will be randomized to one of two parent training conditions:

    • Weekly outpatient therapy at Bradley Hospital

    • Weekly outpatient therapy at Bradley Hospital plus parent training

  • Regardless of a participant's treatment delivery condition, they will receive CBT with exposure.

  • In addition to treatment, participants will take part in 3 assessments throughout their participation in the study, will be asked to complete short questionnaires after each session, and complete brief daily surveys sent to their smart phone every other week during treatment for which their time will be compensated.

Treatment takes place at Bradley Hospital in East Providence, RI.
