Our Goal

We are testing different ways of delivering care to increase access to evidence-based treatment.

We already know that exposure is an effective treatment for anxiety, but we don’t know as much about if exposure therapy is more helpful for some people if it’s delivered in-person or virtually.

Our current study seeks to understand if there are any differences when exposure is delivered 1) fully in-person; 2) fully remotely; or 3) a combination of in-person and remotely.

Who is
IMPACT-RI for?

Now enrolling youth aged 5-18 experiencing symptoms of anxiety or OCD

Common anxiety symptoms include...

  • Feeling driven to do or repeat things over and over

  • Intense worry or fear in social situations

  • Difficulty separating from a caregiver or important figure

  • Constant worry about everyday things

  • Inability to speak in some contexts but not others

  • Intense feelings that seem to come out of the blue

About Exposure Therapy

Exposure therapy is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that is evidence-based, safe, and effective for treating anxiety and OCD.

Exposure therapy entails coming into planned contact with things that make us scared or anxious. We do this process gradually over time, depending on children's needs and preferences.

Our Team-Based Approach

Mental Health Clinician

Specially Trained Coach

At your community care center, you’ll have a dedicated team by your side. A mental health clinician will lead your treatment and partner with a specially trained coach for weekly treatment. Together, they’ll deliver exposure-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Sessions can take place in clinics, homes, or community locations-wherever anxiety lives. This approach helps youth practice coping skills in real-world settings, increases access to care and reduces waitlists.

Participants are randomly placed into one of three treatment groups:

Patient Testimonial

“We loved our therapist and her willingness to help our family. Her patience, positive attitude, and caring way quickly gained my son's trust. She always had a suggestion to help us work through his anxiety. We feel so fortunate to have been a part of this study. It has been life changing for my son and our family. We have been given the tools to help him work this, and I am now confident that we will be successful."
